History

Maurice DEYDIER descended from two generations of wine growers but towards the end of the 19th century he decided to establish a business in Châteauneuf du Pape as a cooper.

He worked with great talent at his craft for some years before facing the facts : he had a passion for the contents of his barrels and hence he too turned to wine making.

He acquired some vineyards, transformed his barrel workshop into a winery and with his first harvest produced the first red, Deydier, Châteauneuf du Pape.

In the 1950’s his son Jean became responsible for the business and quickly introduced a new dimension to the estate. He cleared, planted and exchanged vineyards and with the land contributed by his wife, Hélène Blanchard, the daughter of a wine producer, the estate quickly expanded to about fifteen hectares.

He was a founder member of the « Echansonnerie des Papes » and because of his love for the area propagated and considerably influenced the appelation of Châteauneuf du Pape.

He was a regular supplier of old wines to the Echansonnerie , and their exceptional quality, and the warmth with which he presented them, aroused great pleasure in the famous cellars of the château.

In 1957 he was awarded the medal of the Chevalier du Merite Agricole for :

« The traditional style of production that he brought to the exploitation of his property, and the constant efforts he deployed to make it better ».
